Paris Personal Reflection

Maya`s Personal Reflection on Artistic Representation

This is a photo of Paris. It is a professional black and white photography made by an unknown author. Paris is the capital of France and according people from all over the world is one of the most romantic places in the world. Paris is a top tourist destination, world fashion center, historical and architectural attraction. Paris is known with some of the best drug stores selling the highest quality cosmetics in the world. I have a strong bond with this amazing city because I lived there for almost two years. It is also like a home city for me because my sister lives there and for the time we spent together in Paris we had beautiful moments, lots of fun, sightseeing, trying French cuisine or just shopping like crazy. For me Paris is a very special place where I always love to go back. This picture brings a lot of nice memories and nostalgia for the time I spent there. I am sure that if I leave the US someday I will go back to live in Paris.

Hello everyone!

You are with "Happy Paws" the show dedicated to homeless pets and rescuing animals. In this episode we will familiarize you with the facts about animal sheltering. We encourage you to join us live and to tell us your stories about adopting or rescuing pets. You can call with questions and our specialists will answer live on today`s show. We would like to hear from you!

Across the United States, volunteers and staff in animal shelters and animal control facilities see the results of irresponsible pet ownership and dog and cat overpopulation every day. However, there is very little reliable data available to illustrate this issue on a national level. The following figures were gleaned from independent random studies and the best estimates by experts in the animal welfare and related fields. There are about 5000 community animal shelters nationwide that are independent; there is no national organization monitoring these shelters. The phrases “humane society” and “SPCA” are generic terms; shelters using those names are not part of the Humane Society of the United States or the ASPCA. Currently, no government institution or animal organization is responsible for tabulating national statistics for the animal protection movement.
  • Approximately 8-12 million animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year and approximately 5-9 million are euthanized (60% of dogs and 70% of cats). Shelter intakes are about evenly divided between those relinquished by owners and those picked up by animal control. These are national estimates; the percentage of euthanasia may vary from state to state.
  • Less than 2 percent of cats and only 15-20% of dogs are returned to their owners. Most of these were identified with tags, tattoos or microchips.
  • 25% of dogs that enter local shelters are purebred.
  • Only 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered. 75% of owned pets are neutered.
  • About 60% of all households in the United States have a pet.
  • About 60 million dogs and about 75 million cats are owned in the United States.
  • About 65% of pet owners acquire their pets free or at low cost.
  • The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. 15 – 20% of dogs are purchased from breeders, 10 – 20% of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 – 10% are purchased from pet shops.
  • At least 20% of cats are acquired as strays.
  • Over 20% of people who leave dogs in shelters adopted them from a shelter.
  • The cost of spaying or neutering a pet is less than the cost of raising puppies or kittens for one year.
  • The average cost of basic food, supplies, medical care and training for a dog or cat is $400 to $700 annually.

  • At the end of today`s show we would like to thank the ASPCA and Anti-Cruelty Society for providing us with the information based on their statistics and experience in sheltering pets through the years. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

    1. In the first modern Olympics, Athens 1896, first place winners were awarded silver medals and olive branches. Second place contestants were awarded bronze medals and third place finishers left empty handed.
    2. First place winners in the 1900 Paris Olympics received paintings instead of gold medals because they were considered to be more valuable.
    3. The first Olympic city to award Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals was St. Louis in 1904.
    4. Every two years the Olympic flame is lit at Olympia, Greece by women clad in traditional Greek clothing. Lit through use concave mirror and the sun’s rays, the flame then begins a journey from Greece to the host nation where it is paraded around for months until the opening ceremonies.
    5. The five rings of the Olympic flag symbolize Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas and are said to be ‘linked together in friendship.’ At least one of the rings’ colors – blue, black, green, yellow, and red – appear on every national flag of the world.
    6. Women were not allowed to participate in the first modern Olympics, but they were soon added to the competition for the 1900 Paris games. More athletes than spectators attended the 1900 Olympics.
    7. Stockholm 1912 saw the last gold medals made entirely from gold. Current medals are gold-plated.
    8. Berlin hosted the Olympics in 1916 and 1936. The games of 1936 marked the first time Olympics were televised.
    9. China did not win a medal until 1984. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics alone, they received 100 medals including 51 gold.
    10. The Winter Olympics were established in 1924. Until 1994, both the Winter and Summer Olympics occurred every four years on the same year. In the ’90s, The International Olympic Committee decided to alternate the Olympic games every two years. To get onto a proper alternating schedule, the Winter Olympics were held 2 years apart one time – in 1992 at Albertville, France and in 1994 at Lillehammer, Norway.

At the end I would like to remind you that you can listen our show every evening at 9pm until the end of the Olympic Games. That`s all from me for today. Enjoy your evening!

    My favorite kind of art

My favorite kind of art is the digital photography. This modern art can present one object in many different ways, expressing different moods and messages for the people. Digital photography can make even the simplest thing look special. Using a digital camera and its options allows the artist to catch a scene for less than a second and to photograph with a high quality very small details and objects. Digital photos have a lot of dynamic and deepness of details.
Research and development continues to refine the lighting, optics, sensors, processing, storage, display, and software in digital photography. Some examples are: 3D Models can be created from collections of normal images. The resulting scene can be viewed from novel viewpoints, but creating the model is very intensive. Panoramic photography can be created easily directly in camera without software processing outside of the camera and even there also 3D Panorama uses a single lens. High dynamic range cameras and displays are commercially available. Sensors with dynamic range in excess of 1,000,000:1 are in development, and software is also available to combine multiple non-HDR images (shot with different exposures) into an HDR image.
